BACKYARD CHICKEN MANAGEMENT
Backyard chickens have become quite a popular hobby. It is important to understand proper management of a flock and maintain the highest quality health standards. Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo, a poultry specialist at UC Davis, will discuss the differences between "commercial vs. backyard vs. village" poultry; proper management and disease prevention (biosecurity); and also a discussion of the current Virulent Newcastle Disease outbreak in Southern California.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rodrigo Gallardo, DVM, PhD, DACPV
Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo is an assistant professor in the Department of Population Health & Reproduction at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile in 2004 and a PhD in Poultry Molecular Virology from Auburn University in 2011. His research is focused in poultry medicine, specifically poultry viral diseases and immunology. Dr. Gallardo’s work has focused on international poultry health towards village poultry improvement controlling the Newcastle disease virus in Central America and Africa. Other research interests include avian diseases, production and management; preventive measures to improve flock health; vaccine design; commercial poultry improvement and food safety; and international poultry development programs. Dr. Gallardo holds board certification in the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.
