On behalf of the Academy of the Pacific Rim, we would like to invite you to our 19th Annual Luncheon for College Admissions Officers on Friday, August 30, 2019. Our luncheon is a fabulous way to kick off the admissions season, to get to know a group of high-achieving urban high school students, and to think about current issues in urban education. The event will run from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm.
Now entering its 23rd year (and with alums having gone on to Ph.D., J.D., and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programs!), the Academy of the Pacific Rim is a high-performing, tuition-free charter public school in Boston, Massachusetts. The school’s mission is to empower urban students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to achieve their full intellectual and social potential. The school combines the best of the East – high standards, discipline, and character education – with the best of the West – a commitment to individualism, creativity, and diversity. The Academy serves over 500 students in grades 5-12. Approximately 80% of them will be the first in their families to go to college. About 60% live in poverty and approximately 90% are students of color.
Because of our dedication to rigor and the intimacy of our environment, our students are unusually well prepared for college. Almost all of our graduates go right into college (approx. 90% into 4-year, 10% into 2-year) and persist at a rate of 95% (return to college as full-time sophomores, as recently reported by the National Student Clearinghouse).
What excites us MOST, though, is the success our students experience IN college. Our six-year college completion rate of 70% is between four and seven times the national average for students from similar backgrounds. (Nine percent of students in the lowest income quartile – and seventeen percent in the second lowest – finish college in six years according to a Pell Institute study by Perna. Fifteen percent of first-generation students finish college in six years according to a Georgetown study by Engle & Tinto.)
Come spend the day with us! You can meet our students, hear about what we are seeing in college admissions, network with peer institutions, and eat a fabulous Caribbean lunch. This year we hope to bring back some alumni who have gone on to particularly interesting pursuits:
A young man who studied Marketing at Bentley, started two popular clothing lines, and whose work was featured at Paris Fashion Week and at one of the Museum of Fine Arts’ Late Nights.
A young woman who majored in Chinese at College of the Holy Cross, just graduated from Suffolk Law School as the President of the Black Law Student Association, and is headed to work at a Boston law firm.
A young woman who majored in Health and Human Biology at Brown, will enter the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth this fall, and hopes to combine traditional and alternative forms of medicine.
We hope you will come! Put it on your travel calendar now! Please RSVP so we have room for you at lunch and at a college fair for our 10th-12th graders: . Until then, have a fantastic summer.
With deep appreciation and admiration,
The APR College Placement Team
