24th Annual Raoul Wallenberg Dinner

Join us at the Nordic Museum for the 24th annual Raoul Wallenberg Dinner. This year’s keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Vanessa Barker of Stockholm University, who will help us to honor Wallenberg’s legacy by exploring one of the humanitarian challenges of our contemporary moment. Professor Barker’s lecture, “What Happened to Humanitarianism? A Crisis of Solidarity, 2015 to Present” will provide insight into the Swedish response to the European refugee crisis and how this response is shaping the future of the region.

Vanessa Barker is Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University, Associate Director of Border Criminologies at the University of Oxford, Visiting Professor of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo, and video producer and contributor to Border Criminologies YouTube channel. Her research focuses on questions of democracy and penal order, the welfare state and immigration, the criminalization and penalization of migrants, and the role of civil society in penal reform. Her recent book Nordic Nationalism and Penal Order: Walling the Welfare State examines the border closing in Sweden during the height of the refugee crisis and the rise of penal nationalism in response to mass mobility.
