From Old French golpilz, gulpil, vorpil, volpil, from Vulgar Latin *vulp?culus, alteration of Latin vulp?cula ("fox kit"), diminutive of vulp?s. Compare goupille. See also Old Italian volpiglio, Occitan volpìlh, Catalan volpell, Portuguese golpelha, Spanish vulpeja. Replaced by renard, by euphemism.
