From Middle English beshinen, beschinen, from Old English besnan ("to shine upon, light up, illuminate"), from Proto-Germanic *bisk?nan? ("to shine upon"), equivalent to be- +‎ shine. Cognate with Dutch beschijnen ("to shine upon"), German bescheinen ("to shine upon").
