From Middle English Italy, Italie, from Old English Italia ("Italy"), from Latin Italia ("Italy"), via Ancient Greek ? (?talí?), from Oscan ? (Víteliú). Usually explained as a cognate of vitulus ("calf"), thus meaning "land of young bulls" in Oscan.
